Education Services

Overseas families are increasingly looking at the long term investment value of their children’s education in the United Kingdom. In many instances, entrepreneurs and investors with a Tier 1 Visa will enter the United Kingdom with children and need to know the best educational options for their children.

Also, those entering on a student visa to study in the United Kingdom as undergraduates or postgraduates can then transfer on to the Tier 1 Entrepreneur scheme with investment of GBP two hundred thousand (£200,000). There are also other Tier 1 Entrepreneur routes available for graduate entrepreneurs which can lead to permanent residency in the United Kingdom.

Anyone opting for an education in the United Kingdom is making one of the most important decisions in their life. Not just for the impact it has on your career prospects and long-term future, but also for the opportunities it gives you to experience new cultures, new customs and new ideas firsthand.

For those parents opting to send their children to boarding school, we offer guardianship services via our partners. These are professional child and student guardianship services to international students attending boarding schools in the United Kingdom. We provide these services to children whose parents live abroad and closely work with parents, schools and host families.

So what does the United Kingdom have to offer international students?

Education System in the United Kingdom

The education system in the United Kingdom is different to that in many other countries.

The system is broadly classified into the following four main categories:

Primary Education

Children in the United Kingdom start their education with primary education at the age of five years. It is for six years and students will be educated up to the age of eleven at this level. Primary education in the United Kingdom is sometimes divided into two parts – infant/nursery schools (age five to seven) and junior schools (age seven to eleven).

Secondary Education

Secondary education encompasses the next level of education between the age group of eleven to sixteen years, which is similar to ‘High school.’ Here, students will be pursuing a common set of courses and take the General Certificate of Secondary Education (‘GCSE’) exam conducted at the end of secondary education.

Many pupils in the United Kingdom pursue an additional two years of Advanced level (GCE A level) equivalent qualifications as sixth form students. They can also pursue Advanced Supplementary Level (GCE AS level) exams after secondary education. International students often enter the education system at this point.

Most higher education begins at the age of eighteen at colleges or universities. Most international students will enter directly into the United Kingdom higher education system, after completing their home country’s equivalent to the United Kingdom’s ‘further education.’

Undergraduate

Undergraduate degrees take three years to complete, while at Scottish universities they last four years. Professional courses, such as medicine, veterinary medicine, law and teaching, usually are undertaken as five-year undergraduate degrees.

Types of undergraduate degrees include:

  • BSc (Bachelor of Science)
  • BA (Bachelor of Arts)
  • BEng (Bachelor of Engineering)

Postgraduate

At a graduate level, a Master's degree is normally earned in a single year, a research Master's degree takes two years and a Doctorate degree can be completed in three years.

Types of Master’s degree include:

  • M Sc (Master of Science)
  • MA (Master of Arts)
  • M Ed (Master of Education)
  • LLM (Master of Law)
  • MBA (Master of Business Administration)

Types of Doctoral degree include:

  • PhD (Doctor of Philosophy)
  • MD (Doctor of Medicine)
  • EdD (Doctor of Education)

For admission in universities of the United Kingdom, international students need to have a minimum score on TOEFL/IELTS. Many universities disregard the English requirement for the students who scored 65% and above in English.
